Your library stays on your computer
Otlet has no accounts. Your bookmarks, tags, notes and settings are stored in your browser on your computer, and the extension sends nothing to us: no analytics, no tracking, no copies of your bookmarks. The one exception is crash reports, and only if you turn them on (below). This website has no analytics or trackers either.
Crash reports (off unless you turn them on)
In the setup or under Settings → Crash reports you can let Otlet send a report when something in its own code breaks, so it can be fixed. A report says what went wrong (the error and its message, with any web addresses and email addresses taken out), where in Otlet's code it happened, which part of Otlet it was (new tab, popup, Settings or background), your Otlet version, and your browser and its version. It never includes your links, page titles, searches, notes or tags, or your IP address. Reports go to Sentry (sentry.io), stored in the EU, are used only to find and fix bugs and are deleted after at most 90 days. Turning the switch off stops them at once.
Features that talk to other sites (off unless you turn them on)
A few optional features fetch things straight from other websites. Those requests go from your browser to those sites, not to us, and are sent without your cookies.
- Search suggestions in the new tab's Web mode: what you type is sent, as you type, to the suggestion service of the search engine you chose (for example Google's), so it can suggest searches. Web addresses you type and local network addresses are never sent. The browser asks for access to that one service when you turn this on, and that engine's own privacy policy applies to what it receives.
- Visited pages: Web mode suggests pages you've visited and completes sites you often go to. It uses your browser's list of most visited sites, or your browsing history if you allow it. Either way this is read on your computer only and never leaves it.
- Link previews: to show a site's own picture on a link's card, Otlet downloads the beginning of each saved page once and keeps a small copy of its picture on your computer (it's never backed up). Like any visit, the site sees your IP address. Links that might do something when opened (sign-out, unsubscribe or one-time sign-in links, or addresses with keys in them) and local network addresses are never fetched. The browser asks for access to all sites when you turn this on; turning it off gives that back and deletes the copies.
Deleting your data
- Delete links, tags and smart views in Otlet itself; they're gone from your browser right away.
- Uninstalling the extension deletes everything it stored in your browser.
- To keep a copy, export a backup file first (Settings → Import & export). It's a file on your computer that only you have, and Otlet can import it again later.
- Turning link previews off deletes the preview pictures Otlet kept.
- We have nothing else to delete: apart from opt-in crash reports, nothing about you ever reaches us.
